‘The Mother’ by Lydia Davis

Speaking of feral little stories, this one has perhaps the most cruelty per ounce of any story I have read. I will never be able to tell you why it is a story and not a poem.

First published in Break it Down, FSG, 1986. Collected in The Collected Stories of Lydia Davis, FSG/Hamish Hamilton, 2009
